Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC) Aviation Tactics Practice Exam

Contour flight is characterized by maintaining a constant airspeed while the aircraft flies at varying elevations. This mode allows the aircraft to navigate closely along the terrain, capitalizing on the natural contours of the ground, such as hills and valleys. By adjusting its altitude in accordance with the terrain's features, the aircraft remains at a safe distance from obstacles while optimizing its tactical advantage, especially in low-level flight operations.

The emphasis on constant airspeed is crucial as it aids in stability and predictability in handling, which is particularly important when flying in close proximity to the ground and maneuvering around terrain objects. This aspect of contour flight distinguishes it from other terrain flight modes that might prioritize either airspeed management or elevation changes differently.
